The President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) has issued an urgent security alert warning party leaders and supporters of what he described as a renewed wave of abductions and detentions targeting opposition figures ahead of the 2026 general elections.
In a statement shared on his official social media platforms, the NUP leader alleged that an outfit identified as Crime Intelligence had launched coordinated operations in Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono and surrounding districts, with similar actions reportedly extending to other urban areas across the country.
According to the statement, several NUP leaders and pro-change activists had already been picked up, with security teams allegedly deployed in groups to arrest multiple individuals in different locations.
The party leader claimed the operation began recently and is intended to disrupt opposition mobilisation efforts ahead of the elections.
The Nile Post could not independently verify the claims.
However, the NUP president said the party had received what he described as “credible information” regarding the arrests and what he termed enforced disappearances of its members.
In response, NUP leadership advised its members and supporters to take heightened personal safety precautions, including remaining vigilant, limiting predictable movements, safeguarding personal information and exercising caution in communication.
The statement also urged families and communities to remain alert and supportive of individuals they believe may be at risk.
Despite the reported security concerns, the NUP president called on party supporters to remain resilient and to continue participating in lawful political organising.
He stressed collective responsibility, encouraging citizens to stay engaged in the democratic process even if some leaders are detained.
The statement concluded with a message asserting that intimidation of individual leaders would not halt broader political participation, and called on Ugandans to take personal initiative in civic engagement and election-related activities.
By the time of publication, security agencies had not issued an official response to the allegations.
The development comes amid heightened political activity as parties begin early preparations for the 2026 general elections, a period that has historically been marked by increased political tension and security concerns.
